Well, I don't know about wanting it, but the premeire episode was decent enough to hold my attention and keep a season pass on my TiVo. If you can imagine copying the "American Idol" formula -- complete with three judges, one of whom is a snarky British guy; bad auditions; multiple rounds -- but in the context of casting the John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John roles in a Broadway production of "Grease," you'd have this show. Well, I guess to be fair, you'd also have to cross it with "So You Think You Can Dance," since there appears to be a dance element as well.
My biggest complaint, so far, with the show is the dumb catch-phrase that's used to pass people through to the next round: "You're the one that we want . . . to see at Grease Academy." How can 50+ people be "the one"?!? I mean, at least the boot-phrase, "You're not Sandy" or "You're not Danny" makes sense.
Also, there's one male contestant, who made it pass the screening round, who is 42 years old. 42? Sure, it's the answer to everything, if you've read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," but that's older than I am! And to play a teenager in high school? Heck, I remember reading that Olivia Newton-John was reluctant to take the Sandy role in the movie because she was 29 at the time. . . . Anyway, I admire the guy's willingness to follow his dreams, and if he can pull off a credible effort at passing for 17 or 18, more power to him.
