Thanks for that link & excerpt, Tung. Very interesting commentary from Angela.

Were you or anyone else suprised they merged so early? I don't usually watch the show so I don't know if that's typical. It seems to me that if they were trying to experiment with the effects of racial segregation/integration on the contestants, the segregation phase would have had to last a little longer.

I seem to recall that in past seasons, when the show started off with more than two tribes, there was a relatively early merger to create two tribes. Whether it was this early, I can't remember.

Given that the gameplay decision to merge was made long ago (well before the airing, obviously), I'd say that this shows that the producers never really intended it to be an "experiment," only something to cause controversy and hopefully draw viewers.
