Ah, football Saturdays in the small college town. . . .
On some Sundays, we've been taking the little emperor out to Sunday brunch at the Hamburg Inn No. 2, an Iowa City landmark. Apparently, every four years during the run-up to primary season, when politicians flock to Iowa, it's common for the Presidential wannabes to stop in for Hamburg Inn's home cooking. I think it was also mentioned in a "West Wing" episode.
Anyway, my wife thought Saturday would be better than Sunday, because lunchtime would mean that most people in the city would be at the football game. Boy, did she turn out to be right! There was no wait at all (unlike the usual 10-25 minute wait), and we had a choice of table or booth. Sadly, the service was still slow as usual; how long can it take to cook a cheeseburger and a bison burger?
The local mall (Sycamore, not Coral Ridge, for those of you in the area) was also pretty empty, though the Radio Shack did set up a giant plasma screen TV outside the store, carrying the game. (We won, 56-0.)
So, football Saturdays do have their pluses. I can't get to the law school if I happened to need anything (which I sort of did), but lots of the local stores and restaurants may be less crowded during game time. (After the game may be an entirely different matter. . . .)
