Iowa City = Riyadh

From something that my research assistant found for me, relevant to a paper I'm working on:

"Dr. Michael Wagner, a 49-year-old ophthalmologist, said he moved to Riyadh from Iowa City almost two years ago and found a certain similarity." [from the NY Times]

Er, okay . . . .

Huh? Do chicks in Iowa City wear burqas or something?

Generally flat? Most days are sunny? There are malls with parking areas around them?
