Has there ever been an episode of a show that's had the finest scene in that show's history as well as the worst ever? Last night's episode of "24" may be the first . . . .
The good: Smarmy Will Cummings, chief of staff to the toady President Logan, has been unmasked as the mole who's been helping the terrorists unload lethal nerve gas. Turns out he fancied himself a patriot who wanted to help the U.S. by creating a WMD disaster somewhere else, which would strength the country's hand in going after terrorists. Former President Palmer's assassination and the deaths of the hostages at the Ontario Airport were just regrettable necessities. . . . Unfortunately for Cummings, Jack Bauer has figured it out, and it's just so satisfying when Jack beats up Cummings and extracts the info about the nerve gas.
The bad: Just before Jack goes off to interrogate Cummings, his former love Audrey Raines has to call him up and ask him if he still loves her. Huh?!? She's the Defense Department's official representative to the L.A. Counterterrorism Unit branch. Act like a government official charged with defending the country -- wait until the day is over before bothering Jack with questions like that!!!
