Both you and your wife should sign, then put it in the night deposit at your bank or via ATM. Once it gets past a disinterested teller you're home free.

Always on the lookout for members of the vast right-wing consipiracy, I immediately thought that Sears was trying to punish you for having different last names and/or deter other couples from doing so. But I admit that sounds way paranoid. :)

Or to punish me for having a non-Western given name. . . . (If so, perhaps this sort of thing works -- after all, my baby son has a Western given name!)

every year since I started working (about 20 years), the IRS sends me a refund check with the wrong first name on it (it's close, but still not right) - the last check was for more than $5,000 (I've tried to correct the name issue every year, and always put the right name on my return with my correct SSN, but the IRS refuses to make any change). Every year, I sign the right name on the back of the check and deposit it. I've never had the least bit of trouble doing so from any bank I've used.
