Since I moved from blog-city, my recent blogging absence isn't due to hosting outages, but rather the arrival of Baby Yin. It took 18 1/2 hours of labor, but he was well worth the wait. Little Nicholas tipped the scales at 7 pounds, 5 ounces.
Why Nicholas? One reason is that Nicholas means "conqueror of the world." Judging from this picture, he's already flexing his muscles to conquer the world:

Meanwhile, my students were sweet enough to send us flowers to mark the occasion. Or perhaps they were just happy that I had to cancel class . . . . ? (In all seriousness, I was quite touched by the gesture.)
So, I think this means that we have increased the size of the Asian population in Iowa by about 1 percent?
UPDATE (4/11): Okay, now I understand what people mean about sleep deprivation. . . .
Meanwhile, thanks to Old Skool (Stop the Bleating!), Tony Rickey, JCA, and Prof. Bainbridge for blogging kind wishes for Nicholas, and to all the commentators below as well.
Interestingly, JCA sees Nicholas as a future Cal. L. Rev. editor, while Prof. Bainbridge sees him as a future Bruin. Considering where Mom and Dad went, that's certainly in his genes, but I tend to think that with two lawyers for parents, the little one is likely to run far far away from law school. (I suppose he could still go to UCLA, though.)
Meanwhile, Tony Rickey points out that blogs will be embarrassing for some kids 15 years from now:
It used to be that parents broke out their baby pictures in order to embarass young men when they brought their dates home. Now the young ladies in question, with the help of Google, will be able to look up the pictures themselves...
Who knows what the Internet/Web/Google will look like in 15 years? And by the way, he's not going to be bringing young ladies or girls home to meet Dad at 15. . . .
Professor,
Yeah Baby!!!!! Praise the Lord!!! What a great-looking boy! I know how you feel, as I just had my first 4 months ago. Take a look:

Recent pictures of Emily
I just showed Stephanie and she sends along her congratulations TO YOUR WIFE!!! She just said that she knows how your wife feels right now, pain yet great happiness, and you finished your job a long time ago!! hahahha Seriously, thank God your baby is here and healthy. I am glad your worrying was for nothing. I'll bet you are every bit as proud of him as I am of Emily.
Best,
Brian Grayson

BABY NICHOLAS! He looks REALLY BIG to me. Judging from his size I think he's going to increase the adverage height of all Asian population in Iowa for another 1%!
Congratulations once again. You are welcome for the flowers. We were all talking about the baby before class on Wednesday. There's some secret guessing going on in our class wondering when the big day would come. But don't tell them that I told you. I hope Amy's doing fine, she should be a happy mother now. 18.5 hours of labor, that seems like a lot of work to me.

Congratulations!
Let me pass on a good bit of advice that I recently received: Babies are not eggplants. They will not spoil if you hold them too long. ;-)

Congratulations. That kid's huge. The "conquerer" seems fitting. Don't worry about class - we've got it from here on out. :)

I hope Nicholas doesn't give you too many opportunities to learn the art of the 3:00 am post. What a good looking kid!

Congrats!
The new Mr. Yin looks like he's plotting his rise to the Supreme Court, or perhaps Apprentice 2028...

Increasing Iowa City's asian population by one percent. Under ordinary circumstances that would be no big deal. But knowing his father. Now that's a truly frightening thought. Best of luck to you. Hope he takes after Amy.

I agree that young Nicholas at age 15 will not be bringing home young ladies to meet Dad (whoa Tung, that's you!). The way I see this playing out, Nicholas will excercise his teenage rebellion by matriculating at Cal Tech at age 15. So at that age, he'll be sneaking the ladies into his dorm room.
Congratulations to you and Amy. I know that you will be wonderful parents.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am so happy for you. I believe in true rebellious fashion, I think young Mr. Nicholas has a future as a member of Stanford's class of 2026. But really, he's a beautiful boy. Best of luck and send Amy my regards.
